THIBODAUX, La. – The Purple Eagles (2-1) defeated Texas Southern (1-2), 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 25-20, 25-17) to close out the Colonel Classic on Saturday.
Match Recap
First Set
- The Purple Eagles opened the set on an 8-5 run to take the lead over Texas Southern, but the Tigers scored three straight points to tie the score, 8-8.
- The teams traded points and were soon tied up again, 12-12.
- The Tigers scored three straight to reclaim the lead, 15-12, but Niagara answered with its own 3-0 run, kicked off by a kill from Mary Redl, to tie the score at 15-15.
- The Purple Eagles and the Tigers were tied five more times, but the Tigers went on a 5-1 run to earn the set one win, 25-21.
Second Set
- Niagara led Texas Southern early in the set, 7-4, but the Tigers scored four straight points to take the lead, 8-7.
- The Purple Eagles answered with four straight points, including kills from Jaycie Roberts and Taylor Allen and an ace from Laryssa Imbuzeiro, to reclaim the lead, 11-8.
- The Purple Eagles and the Tigers traded the lead and, down by just two points, 18-16, back-to-back kills from Cassie Seminoff and one from Roberts put NU back on top, 19-18.
- Trailing by one point, 24-23, Niagara went on a 3-0 run, including two kills from Sammie Sabra, to close out the set and earn the 26-24 win.
Third Set
- The Tigers took a 5-3 lead in the first set, but an attack error and kills from Jessica Streuer and Redl gave NU the lead , 6-5.
- Leading 12-11, the Purple Eagles scored three straight points, including kills from Redl and Sabra, to extend their lead to four points, 15-11.
- The Tigers came within two, 16-14, but kills from Sabra, Seminoff and Allen put Niagara ahead by five points, 19-14.
- Up 23-20, kills from Redl and Streuer closed out the set for the Purple Eagles. NU won the third set, 25-20, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Fourth Set
- Ahead by one, 7-6, the Purple Eagles went on a 3-0 run, with kills from Seminoff and Roberts, to extend their lead, 10-6.
- A kill from Sabra and an ace from Imbuzeiro gave NU a five-point lead over the Tigers, 14-9.
- Niagara did not allow the Tigers to score more than three straight points for the remainder of the set. The Purple Eagles went on a 3-0 run, with kills from Redl and Allen and another ace from Imbuzeiro, to close the set and earned the 3-1 match win.
Eagle's Eye On
- Roberts recorded her third straight double-double with 10 kills and 22 digs.
- Redl led the team in kills with 13.
- Bella Peroni had a team-high and career-high 27 digs.
- Imbuzeiro had a team-best and career-high three aces. She also led the team in blocking with six total blocks (one solo, five assists), which is also her career-best.
- Streuer led the team in assists with 25, while Casey Brown added 22 assists.
