Women’s Lacrosse Advances To Semis With Win Over Quinnipiac

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Buoyed by a 10-goal first half, the Purple Eagles defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 16-11, in the 2021 MAAC Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday.
 
SYNOPSIS
The trio of Lexi Braniecki, Shea Swartwout, and Rachel Crane combined for 13 of the season-high 16 goals by the Purple Eagles.
 
A week after beating the Bobcats at home, the Purple Eagles opened the game scoring four goals in six minutes.  The trio of Crane (twice), Swartwout, and Braniecki provided the goals. Crane collected a first-half hat trick in 12 minutes as the Purple Eagles led 6-1 after 16 minutes.
 
Quinnipiac scored consecutive goals to cut Niagara's lead to 6-3, but NU closed the final 12 minutes of the half on a 4-1 run for a 10-4 halftime advantage.
 
Leading 13-8 heading until the final 10 minutes, the Purple Eagles reeled off three straight goals for a 16-8 lead with three minutes remaining.
 
EAGLE'S EYE ON…
  • Lexi Braniecki led the game with career-highs in goals (5) and points (5).  
  • Rachel Crane finished with four goals and two ground balls.
  • Shea Swartwout had her seventh 4-goal game of the season while leading the game in shots with 11.
  • Michelle Messenger snagged a season-high 16 saves and nine ground balls.
  • Lois Garlow scored twice and had a game-high two assists for four points.
  • Lauren Paul had a game-high three ground balls and had one caused turnover to move into a tie on the career-caused turnovers list (89).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Niagara will advance to the MAAC Semifinals for the first time since 2017.
  • NU tied a season-high in goals with 16, shots (34), and clears (23) while setting season-highs in shots on goal (28) and saves (16).
  • The Purple Eagles improved to 6-1 at home with the six wins setting a program record.
