Kelsey Araujo and
Djeynaba Thiam each netted a brace as part of a season-high six goals and seven assists by the Purple Eagles in a 6-3 victory over Canisius in the regular-season finale on Tuesday.
GAME RECAP
Needing to pick up a point to clinch a spot in the conference tournament, the Purple Eagles ripped the back of the net with six goals including four in the second half, to pull away from their archrivals. The Golden Griffins tied the game on three occasions before Niagara scored the game's final three goals.
Kelsey Araujo opened the scoring in the sixth minute after receiving a long ball from
Annie Ibey to beat the keeper far post. Two minutes later, Canisius tied the game with a goal coming off a corner kick. Niagara scored its second goal from a set piece.
Bayley Sullivan played a cross in the box which
Mackenzie Mix flick-on to
Djeynaba Thiam who tapped in her first goal of the evening. In the 43
rd minute, the Golden Griffins struck again as the game went into halftime knotted at 2-2.
Niagara's third goal also came on a set piece, this time from a corner kick.
Molly Tobin powered home a header for her first career goal in the 53
rd minute. However, Canisius once again equalized with a goal two minutes later to the game at 3-3.
The Purple Eagles broke the tie with two goals in two minutes. Araujo provided the game winner in the 62
nd minute after smashing home a pass from Thiam. In the 64
th minute, Thiam was on the receiving end of pass, sprinting past two defenders to latch on to a long ball from Sullivan to net her second goal.
Emma Bough scored the final goal with a thunderous strike just outside of the box in the 87
th minute.

- The nine combined goals are the most in the series history, surpassing the eight combined goals scored in 1983.
- Niagara's six goals are the most since a 7-0 win over Saint Peter's on October 14, 2012
- The six goals are the most against Canisius since 2005.
