NU Drops A Pair To The Hawks

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles were swept by the Monmouth Hawks in a doubleheader on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • The Hawks got on the board in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • A solo homerun from Monmouth in the top of the second extended its lead, 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rachel Funk singled up the middle, plating Maggie Kellner to leave Niagara trailing by just two runs, 3-1.
  • An RBI single from Kelsey Harrigan in the bottom of the fifth put Niagara within one run of the Hawks, 3-2.
  • The Hawks, however, scored three runs in the sixth and held the Purple Eagles off for the remainder of the game to earn the win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Harrigan led the Purple Eagles with two hits. Funk and Jaden Swiatek each added one hit.
  • Harrigan had one stolen base.
  • Riley Crum (5-6) took the loss in the circle. She pitched a complete game, fanning seven and giving up five earned runs on 10 hits.

Game Recap
  • The Hawks once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles in the first inning.
  • A two-run homerun and a two-RBI double from Monmouth in the top of the second inning extended its lead, 4-0.
  • Niagara got on the board in the bottom of the third after a two-RBI single from Heather Haberman. The Purple Eagles trailed by just four runs, 6-2.
  • The Hawks added three more runs in the fourth, including another two-run homer, to extend their lead, 9-2.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Swiatek singled to left center, scoring Kaity McInall to leave Niagara trailing by six, 9-3.
  • Monmouth added one more run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to get the 14-3 victory and sweep the four-game season series.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Swiatek had a career-high two hits.
  • Haberman led the team in RBIs with two.
  • Funk and McInall each had one double.
  • Maggie Vesneske had one stolen base for the Purple Eagles.
  • Jenna Patterson (0-1) took the loss. She struck out one and allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
  • Samantha Hare tossed 3.1 innings for the Purple Eagles and struck out a career-high six batters.
