Purple Eagles Split With Canisius On Senior Day

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara closed out the regular season with a series split against crosstown rival Canisius on Sunday. Prior to the start of Sunday's matches, the Purple Eagles honored graduating senior Grace Hetterscheidt.

Match Recap
1st Set
  • Canisius went on a 3-0 run to open the first set, but Niagara answered with four straight points, including kills from Hetterscheidt, Mary Redl and Jaycie Roberts gave NU the lead, 4-3.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Griffs traded points and Canisius took a one-point lead, 11-10, but back-to-back kills from Redl and Roberts put NU back ahead, 12-11.
  • With the score tied 13-13, Niagara scored three straight points to take a 16-13 lead over Canisius.
  • The Purple Eagles led by one, 16-15, before going on a 4-0 run to extend their lead, 20-15.
  • Canisius answered with five straight points to tie the score once again, 20-20.
  • Kills from Hetterscheidt and Cassie Seminoff put NU back in the lead, 22-20, but Canisius earned three consecutive points to take a 23-22 advantage.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Griffs went back and forth and were tied again, 25-25. Niagara, however, scored the final two points to win the first set, 27-25.
2nd Set
  • Niagara and Canisius went back and forth to open the second set and the Purple Eagles took a one-point lead, 10-9.
  • Three straight points from NU extended the lead, 13-9.
  • Niagara led by two, 14-12, and got ahead by four, 16-12, after kills from Roberts and Hetterscheidt.
  • Canisius came back within two, 16-14, but three straight points from the Purple Eagles, including two kills from Roberts, put Niagara head, 19-14.
  • Niagara and Canisius traded points, but the Purple Eagles maintained control, winning set two, 25-21.
3rd Set
  • Canisius went on a 5-2 run to open the third set.
  • The Purple Eagles trailed by two, 6-4, but quickly tied the score, 6-6, thanks to an error from the Griffs and a kill from Roberts.
  • The score was tied four more times before the Purple Eagles scored four straight points, including three kills from Hetterscheidt, to take a 14-10 lead over the Griffs.
  • Niagara soon extended its lead to six points, 19-13.
  • Kills from Redl and Seminoff extended the Purple Eagle lead, 21-14.
  • The Purple Eagles led, 24-18, before the Griffs scored three straight points to come within three points of the NU lead, 24-21. A kill from Roberts, however, earned the 25-21 set win and the 3-0 match victory.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 digs and a team-high 14 kills.
  • Amanda Darling recorded a team-high and career-high 26 digs.
  • Hetterscheidt added 13 kills.
  • Hetterscheidt and Taylor Allen led the team in blocking with four total blocks.
  • Jessica Streuer had a team-high 22 assists.

Match Recap
1st Set
  • Niagara went on a 5-1 run to open the set, including two kills from Redl, one from Roberts and one from Lexi Bapst.
  • With Niagara ahead, 8-5, the Griffs scored three straight points to tie the score, 8-8.
  • An attack error by Canisius put NU back on top, 9-8, but the Griffs scored three straight again to take the lead, 11-9.
  • Niagara and Canisius were tied, 12-12, when the Griffs went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead.
  • Still trailing by four, 18-14, kills from Allen and Redl and an attack error from Canisius brought the Purple Eagles back within one point of the Griffs, 18-17.
  • Trailing by two, 20-18, Niagara scored earned three straight points, which included a kill from Roberts and a kill and an ace from Bapst, to take the lead, 21-20.
  • Canisius tied things up, 21-21, but two more kills from Roberts gave Niagara the 23-21 advantage. The Purple Eagles allowed the Griffs one more points before winning the set, 25-22.
2nd Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Griffs were tied 12 times over the first 24 points of the set.
  • With the score knotted at 12 points apiece, the Griffs scored three straight to take the lead, 15-12.
  • Back-to-back kills from Seminoff and an error from the Griffs soon tied the score again, 16-16.
  • Canisius got ahead, 20-17, but Niagara earned three straight points to tie things up, 20-20.
  • The Griffs scored five of the last six points to win set two, 25-21, and tie the match at one set apiece.
3rd Set
  • The Griffs got ahead of the Purple Eagles in the third set, 16-10, but Niagara scored three straight points to cut the Canisius lead to three, 16-13.
  • Once again trailing by just three points, 19-16, a kill from Redl and an attack error from the Griffs brought the Purple Eagles within one point of the lead, 19-18.
  • Down by two, 23-21, the Purple Eagles scored four straight points to close out the set, including one kill from Hetterscheidt and three straight kills from Roberts. NU won the third set, 25-23, to take a 2-1 match lead.
4th Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Griffs went back and forth in the fourth set, with the score tied a total of 15 times.
  • With the Griffs ahead by one, 10-9, kills from Roberts and Redl put the Purple Eagles on top, 11-9.
  • Canisius reclaimed the lead, 12-11, but Niagara quickly got back ahead, 13-12.
  • Three straight points from the Griffs gave them a 15-13 lead over the Purple Eagles, but Niagara tied the score, 15-15.
  • The Griffs took a two-point lead, but a 3-0 run from NU, capped by kills from Bapst and Savannah Brownfield, gave Niagara a one-point lead, 18-17.
  • The Purple Eagles got ahead by three points, 24-21, before three consecutive points from the Griffs tied the score, 24-24.
  • Niagara earned a point to take a 25-24 lead, but the Griffs scored three points to end the set and tie the match at two sets apiece.
5th Set
  • Kills from Hetterscheidt and Roberts gave Niagara a 2-0 lead to open set number five.
  • The Griffs, however, scored four straight points to get ahead, 4-2.
  • Kills from Hetterscheidt and Redl tied the score at four points each, but Canisius earned three consecutive points to reclaim the lead, 5-4.
  • The Purple Eagles came within one point of Canisius, 7-6, before the Griffs scored seven straight points to take a 14-6 lead. Canisius allowed Niagara one more point before winning the set, 15-7, and the match, 3-2.
 
Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts finished with a career-high 27 digs and a team-high 21 kills, just one short of her career-high, to record her fifth double-double of the season. She also had a team-best two aces.
  • Darling had a career-high 37 digs.
  • Allen had a team-high six total blocks.
  • Redl added 12 kills for the Purple Eagles.
  • Streuer led the team in assists with 27 and Casey Brown added 19 assists.
  • Streuer had 15 digs, Bapst added 14 digs and Seminoff had 12 digs.
