NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Rodrigo Almeida posted a first-half brace as part of a five-point first half as part of a dominating 4-0 win over the Canisius Golden Griffins on Sunday afternoon.

SYNOPSIS
Three days after beating their archrivals for the first time in eight years, the Purple Eagles displayed one of their most comprehensive outings in the series recent history. The Niagara attack was relentless throughout the 90 minutes while the defense stymied any Canisius attack, limiting the Golden Griffins to only two shots on target.

The Purple Eagles scored three goals in a seven-minute span in the first half. Niagara opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Nuukele Gboe shot was saved onto the post and Rodrigo Almeida headed the ball into the net. Almeida added his second goal five minutes later off a corner kick when he headed home Stephen Hasse's cross.

Almeida almost completed his hat-trick two minutes later when his shot was deflected, but Gabriel Mikina was there to head in Niagara's third. The Purple Eagles, who had several more scoring chances, netted their final goal in the 80th minute. Luigi Boa Morte beat his marker down the left side and sent his cross far post to Brian Barry, who played the ball back across goal into the foot of Luca Pacheco for a tap-in.

EAGLE'S EYE ON…
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Purple Eagles have won consecutive games in the series for the first time since winning six straight from October 2008 to October 2013.
  • Niagara held a 23-6 advantage in shots.

COACH'S CORNER
  • "This group keeps getting better and we had contributions from everyone," said head coach Bill Boyle. "It's great to see the guys buying in on both sides of the ball, as well as set pieces. That was as complete a victory as we've had in my time here at NU. I'm very proud of the guys, but they will be focused now for bigger and better victories!"

UP NEXT
  • The Purple Eagles are back home on April 1 against Manhattan at 2 p.m.
