Gaels Upend Purple Eagles

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y.  – Rachel Crane netted a career-high six goals and two assists as the Purple Eagles had their two-game win streak stopped in a 16-13 defeat by the Iona Gaels on Saturday.

SYNOPSIS
The visitors used pair of runs at the beginning of each half to leave Monteagle Ridge with a win. The Gaels jumped out to a 5-1 lead after eight minutes. However, the Purple Eagles used a 5-1 run of their own to tie the game at 6-6. Rachel Crane assisted on the game-tying goal by Shea Swartwout with 3:31 left in the half. Iona scored with nine seconds on the clock to go into halftime leading 7-6.
 
The Gaels opened the second half scoring five straight goals to build a 12-6 lead with 21 minutes remaining. NU, then, reeled off four straight goals. Crane started the run with consecutive goals in 52 seconds. Lexi Braniecki and Allison McCormick followed to cut the lead to 12-10 with 14 minutes left. Iona answered with two goals in a less than a minute. NU responded with two goals by Crane to head into the final eight minutes trailing 14-12. Though, Iona increased its four-goal advantage with a pair goals in the final minutes.
 
EAGLE'S EYE ON…
  • Rachel Crane had a career-high day in her fifth career game with six goals on seven shots and two assists for eight points, which are the most by a Purple Eagle this season. Crane added four draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Shea Swartwout scored three goals and added an assist. She has 17 goals through four games.
  • Lexi Braniecki scored twice and had one assist.
  • Lauren Paul had five ground balls and one caused turnovers.
  • Lois Garlow had four draw controls and two points.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Niagara had a season-high in shots (31) and shots on goal (26) and tied a season-high in ground balls with 22.
  • Shea Swartwout moved into seventh on the career goals list with 87.
  • Lauren Paul is five caused turnovers away from tying the program career ground ball record of 89.
