Shea Swartwout netted a career-high six goals as the Purple Eagles defeatted the previously unbeaten Siena Saints, 12-8, on Friday night.
SYNOPSIS
The Purple Eagles never trailed on their way to their first win of the season in their second contest. Six days after a fast start in their season opener at Fairfield, the Purple Eagles put pressure on the Saints from the opening draw control.
Shea Swartwout scored her first of six goals 64 seconds into the contest. Siena tied the game at 1-1 five minutes later, but NU netted two goals in 40 seconds from
Rachel Crane and Swartwout for a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Swartwout added her third for a 4-1 lead with 14:20 remaining in the first half. The Saints cut the lead to 4-3 after scoring two goals in 42 seconds with the second coming at the 10-minute mark. However, the Niagara defense would keep Siena scoreless for the next 20 minutes as the Purple Eagles went on a 5-0 run which carried over into the second half.
Niagara scored the final four goals in the first half with Swartwout scoring at the 8 and 1-minute mark while
Allison McCormick and
Mackenzie Travis scoring in between Swartwout's goals.
Jenna Brill capped the 5-0 run with a solo effort one minute into the second half. Siena cut Niagara's lead to 9-5 with 19 minutes remaining, but NU restored its six-goal lead with goals from
Lois Garlow (13:32) and Swartwout (10:28).
EAGLE'S EYE ON…
- Shea Swartwout scored a career-high six goals to lead all scorers. She went 2-for-5 on free position attempts. She has scored 10 goals in two games.
- Rachel Crane and MacKenzie Travis each had three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
- Lauren Paul and Michelle Messenger each had game-highs in ground balls with six. Messenger finished with 12 saves and Paul added one caused turnover to move within six away for tying the program career record.
- Audrey Fithall had a game-high two caused turnovers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Niagara has won three straight home games dating back to last season.
- The Purple Eagles have won four of the last five meetings with Siena and four straight at home.
- Niagara, which entered the game ranking first in the nation in free position opportunities (4-for-5), went 3-for-8.
