Roberts Reaches 1,000 Digs In Manhattan Sweep

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Jaycie Roberts recorded her 1,000th career dig as the Purple Eagles opened the season with two straight-set wins over Manhattan on Saturday.

Match Summary
1st Set
  • The Purple Eagles jumped out to an early lead and were ahead of the Jaspers, 9-7. Niagara then went on a 5-0 run, including two kills from Cassie Seminoff and a kill from Grace Hetterscheidt, to extend its lead, 14-7.
  • The Jaspers came within five, 15-10, but a kill from Jaycie Roberts and an attack error from Manhattan put NU's lead back at seven points, 17-10.
  • Back-to-back kills from Roberts and Seminoff put Niagara ahead, 21-12, but the Jaspers scored five straight points to come within four points of the lead, 21-17.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Jaspers traded points and a kill from Mary Redl iced the 25-19 win in set one for Niagara.
2nd Set
  • The Jaspers led by one-point early, 4-3, but a kill from Hetterscheidt quickly tied the score, 4-4.
  • The score was tied again, 6-6, and two kills from Redl, one from Roberts and a ball handling error by the Jaspers put Niagara in the lead, 10-6.
  • An ace from Roberts and kills from Lexi Bapst and Hetterscheidt extended NU's lead to six points, 16-10.
  • Late in the set, the Purple Eagles led the Jaspers 22-17, and Niagara closed out the set with three straight kills from Roberts to give the Purple Eagles a 2-0 match lead.
3rd Set
  • An ace from Seminoff, two kills from Bapst and kills from Hetterscheidt, Savannah Brownfield and Redl put the Purple Eagles ahead, 6-2.
  • The Purple Eagles soon went on a 6-0 run, including two kills from Allie Simpson, to extend their lead, 12-3, over the Jaspers.
  • Niagara dominated the remainder of the set, never letting the Jaspers score more than two straight points at a time, and earned a 3-0 victory over Manhattan.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts had a double-double with 15 digs and a team-best 10 kills.
  • Amanda Darling recorded a team-high 17 digs.
  • Jessica Streuer led the team in assists with 24.
  • Redl and Hetterscheidt each added eight kills and Bapst had 13 digs.
  • Redl, Simpson and Brownfield each recorded four total blocks.

Match Summary
1st Set
  • The Purple Eagles led the Jaspers, 7-5, early in set one, before scoring four straight points, which included two kills from Seminoff, one kill from Bapst and an ace from Darling, to extend their lead, 11-5.
  • Manhattan scored two points to cut the Purple Eagle lead to four, 11-7, but Niagara answered with five straight points, including two aces from Streuer, to get ahead by nine, 16-7.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Jaspers traded points and Manhattan went on a late 3-0 run to cut the Niagara lead to seven, 24-17, but a service error from the Jaspers earned Niagara the 25-17 set one win.
2nd Set
  • Kills from Roberts and Hetterscheidt and two more aces from Streuer earned the Purple Eagles a 4-0 lead to open the second set.
  • The Jaspers came within two points of the Purple Eagles, 8-6, but four straight points from NU put the Purple Eagles ahead by six, 12-6.
  • A 3-0 run from Manhattan cut Niagara's lead to three, 12-9, but the Purple Eagles answered with a 3-0 run of their own to once again give themselves a six-point advantage, 15-9.
  • The Purple Eagles led the Jaspers, 22-14, when Manhattan scored five straight points to come back within three points of the Purple Eagles, 22-19.
  • Niagara, however, maintained control, winning the final set point on an ace from Bapst to take a 2-0 match lead.
3rd Set
  • Niagara and Manhattan went back and forth to open the third set. With the Jaspers leading by one, 8-7, kills from Redl and Roberts and errors by Manhattan earned NU four straight points to give the Purple Eagles an 11-8 lead.
  • Two kills from the Jaspers tied the score, 11-11, but Niagara quickly took back the lead, 13-11.
  • Niagara led, 14-12, but the Jaspers went on a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead, 16-14.
  • The Purple Eagles answered with seven straight points, including kills from Hetterscheidt, Simpson and Seminoff and an ace from Roberts.
  • The Purple Eagles allowed the Jaspers just four more points and clinched the match win on a service error from Manhattan.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts had a team-high 16 digs, putting her at 1,004 career digs. She also added eight kills.
  • Streuer had a career-high five aces. She also had a team-high 20 assists.
  • Brownfield had a team-high four total blocks.
  • Seminoff led the Purple Eagles in kills with nine.
