Niagara Earns Comeback Win Over Jaspers

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Purple Eagles erased a 16-point deficit to pick up a 73-70 win over Manhattan Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action from the Gallagher Center. 


Maddy Yelle finished the game with a team-high 20 points, going 5-for-8 from the field and 9-for-10 from the line. Ally Haar and Angel Parker added 18 and 12 points, respectively. 


Game Recap
First Quarter
• Niagara and Manhattan traded baskets in the first 6:05 of the contest as the game saw two ties and three lead changes before either team reached 10 points. 
• With the score tied at eight, the Jaspers would finish the quarter on a 7-2 burst, giving them a 15-10 lead heading into the second quarter. 
• Yelle had five of Niagara's first 10-points as the Purple Eagles went 4-for-15 from the field in the first period. 
• The Jaspers went 6-for-14 from the field in the first. 


Second Quarter
• After Niagara tied the game, 21-21, the Jaspers would make five of their next seven baskets over the next 2:52 to make the score 32-26.
• Neither team would score in the final two minutes of the opening half, giving Manhattan a six-point lead at the break.
• Niagara finished the second quarter 6-for-13 from the field.
Kyra Grimshaw and Aaliyah Parker each scored five points in the stanza.


Third Quarter
• Manhattan would outscore Niagara 21-12 through the first 9:30 of the second half, building its lead to a game-best 16-points, 53-38, with 34 seconds left in the third. 
• Haar would connect on her first 3-pointer of the contest with 22 seconds on the clock, putting the Purple and White down 13 heading into the final quarter of play. 
• The third quarter saw Manhattan shoot 41.2 percent, while Niagara connected on just 30.0 percent of its shots in the frame.


Fourth Quarter
• Haar would score five points to open the fourth, connecting on a layup and 3-pointer to help the Purple Eagles pull within 10, 56-46, with 9:05 remaining. 
• Over the next 6:20, Niagara would outscore the Jaspers 19-6 and tie the game at 62 with 3:02 remaining.
• Yelle and Haar combined for 10 points during the run as the Purple Eagles made five shots from the field and seven at the line. 
• The Purple Eagles took back the lead, 69-68, with 1:17 remaining. The lead was the first for Niagara since the opening stanza when the Purple Eagles had a 7-6 advantage over the Jaspers. 
• Manhattan would retake the lead, 70-69, with two made free throws after Olivia Mason collected her fifth foul of the day. 
• After a timeout by Niagara, Yelle inbounded the ball to Angel at the top of the arc before driving to her right for the go-ahead score.
• The Purple and White would play stout defense in the final 37 seconds, and Angel would make two at the charity stripe to seal the win for Niagara. 


Niagara Notes
• Yelle finished with a career-high 20 points, surpassing her previous career-high of 18 set at Rider in February of last season.
• The senior also made a career-high nine free throws in the win.
• Angel finished with five assists, bringing her streak of five or more helpers to eight-straight games. 
• The Cheektowaga, NY native, also recorded her fourth game with six or more steals.
Sydney Faulcon led the Purple Eagles in rebounding for the second-straight game, grabbing seven boards and adding seven points. 
• Haar reached double figures for the third time this season. She also matched her season-high of seven made field goals.  
• Aaliyah added nine points on 4-of-9 shooting in 17 minutes off the bench.
• Niagara finished the game with a season-best 36 forced turnovers. It is the second time the Purple Eagles' opponent finished with 30-plus turnovers this season. 
• The Purple and White improve to 4-1 at the Gallagher Center this season.
• Niagara finished the game with a 37.9 field goal percentage and 67.9 percent clip from the line. 
• The Purple Eagles 19 free-throws made were their second-most in a game this season.
• This is the Purple Eagles' second win this season after trailing by more than 15 points.

• The Purple and White will head to Lawrenceville, NJ, to take on Rider on Dec. 30. Niagara's final game of the 2021 calendar year will tip-off at 7 p.m. from Alumni Gymnasium.
