Niagara Drops MAAC Opener to Saint Peter's

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Purple Eagles dropped a hard-fought contest to Saint Peter's, 68-64, in MAAC women's basketball action from the Gallagher Center Friday night. 

Sydney Faulcon recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kyra Grimshaw scored a career-high 14 points off the bench, while Angel Parker and Maddy Yelle contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. 

GAME RECAP
First Quarter
• The Purple Eagles found themselves down 10-9 with 2:59 remaining in the opening period of play. 
• Niagara would close the quarter on an 11-2 run, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to make the score 20-12. 
• Yelle scored six of her 10 points in the run, including back-to-back layups. 
• The Purple and White finished the quarter 9-for-21 from the field, including 1-for-4 from 3-point land. 

Second Quarter
• Niagara was up 20-12 to start the second and wouldn't let the Peacocks come within more than four points for the first 4-plus minutes of action. 
• Consecutive layups from the Peacocks would eventually tie the game 27-27. 
Lore Porter would immediately give Niagara the lead with a 3-pointer from the corner, making the score 30-27, a lead the Purple Eagles would hold for the 1:47 of game time. 
• Grimshaw would connect on her second 3-pointer of the evening to give Niagara a 38-35 lead heading into the break.

Third Quarter
• Niagara held its lead throughout the third, as the Purple Eagles didn't allow Saint Peter's to get any closer than one point in the third frame. 
• Niagara's largest lead of the quarter came after Parker connected on a 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining in the frame, making the score 52-44. 
• The three-ball would cap off a quick 6-0 spurt by Niagara. 
• Saint Peter's ended the frame on a 7-0 run to draw within one point, 52-51 heading into the final quarter of play. 

Fourth Quarter
• Saint Peter's would take back the lead for the first time since the first quarter with 5:13 left in the contest.
• That lead would grow to five points, 63-58, with 3:02 remaining. 
• The Purple Eagles would spend the next 2:09 of game time on a 6-2 run, retaking the lead on a layup by Olivia Mason with 59 seconds remaining.
• Just 32-seconds later, the Peacocks would find themselves back on top 66-64.
• After a NU timeout – Ally Haar drove to her left but missed the game-tying layup. Faulcon would grab the rebound, but her put-back attempt would trickle across the back iron and fall into the hands of Saint Peter's.
• Niagara would have to foul – sending the Peacocks to the line to seal the 68-64 win. 

Niagara Notes
• The double-double for Faulcon is the first of the junior's career.
• For the second time this season, four Purple Eagles finished with 10 or more points.  
• Parker led Niagara with six assists, her eighth game and seventh in a row with five or more helpers. The junior also had six rebounds. 
• Grimshaw added five rebounds to go with her 14 points.
• Yelle finished the night 5-for-6 from the field and reached double figures for the sixth time this season.
• The Purple and White finished with 40 rebounds, 27 forced turnovers, and nine steals. 
• Niagara scored 28 points off turnovers, 38 in the paint, and 12 on second-chance opportunities.

• Niagara will take on Manhattan this Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Gallagher Center. The contest between the Purple Eagles and Jaspers will air on ESPN3.
