Purple Eagles Fall To Michigan In Series Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Purple Eagles (2-7-2) fell to No. 4 Michigan (11-4-0), 6-1, on Friday night at Yost Ice Arena.

Game Recap
First Period
  • Olivier Gauthier and Jason Pineo both took early shots for the Purple Eagles, but none hit their target.
  • A little less than five minutes into the period, the Purple Eagles were on the power play. Walker Sommer, Mike Faulkner and Chris Harpur all had chances for NU while it had the man-advantage.
  • At 10:26, the Wolverines got on the board, taking a 1-0 lead over Niagara.
  • With about 30 seconds left in the first period, Niagara was on the power play again. Christian Gorscak netted his first goal of the season at 19:39. He was assisted by Lars Rodne and Harpur.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Wolverines were tied, 1-1, going into the first intermission.
Second Period
  • Ryan Cox and Zac Herrmann created early opportunities for the Purple Eagles in the second period, but Cox's shot was blocked and Herrmann's was saved.
  • The Wolverines scored on a power play 5:23 into the period to reclaim the lead, 2-1.
  • Rodne, Gorscak, Shane Ott and Ryan Naumovski had scoring chances for NU in the remainder of the period, but Michigan stayed in the lead, 2-1.
Third Period
  • Michigan scored on a power play less than one minute into the period to take a two-goal lead, 3-1.
  • Naumovski took back-to-back shots in the fifth minute of play, but both were blocked. Pineo also created a chance for NU, but his shot was saved.
  • The Wolverines extended their lead, 4-1, 6:24 into the period.
  • NU was on the power play about seven minutes into the period. Herrmann and Harpur both took shots, but they were both blocked.
  • Michigan scored again at 10:04 and led the Purple Eagles, 5-1.
  • The Purple Eagles were on the power play again 11 minutes into the period. Herrmann had an opportunity for NU, but his shot was saved.
  • The Wolverines added one more goal in the period and Niagara fell to Michigan, 6-1.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Harpur, Herrmann and Pineo each had a team-best two shots on goal.
  • Harpur and Herrmann led the team in blocks with three each, while Faulkner blocked two shots.
  • Jake Sibell (0-4-1) made a career-high 39 saves. He made a game-high 22 saves in the second period.
