LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (13-15, 10-8 MAAC) fell to Canisius (11-17, 10-8 MAAC), 3-1 (24-26, 17-25, 25-20, 17-25), in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Championships on Friday.
Match Recap
First Set
- The Purple Eagles went on an early 5-0 run, including three kills from Mary Redl, to give them an 8-3 lead over Canisius.
- Niagara had a four-point lead, 12-8, when the Griffs scored five straight points to take the lead, 13-12.
- The score was tied three times before the Griffs took a three-point lead, 18-15.
- Kills from Jaycie Roberts and Taylor Allen brought NU within one, 18-17.
- Canisius got ahead, 23-18, but Niagara earned four consecutive points, including two kills from Roberts and an ace from Jessica Streuer, put the Purple Eagles back within one point of the lead, 23-22.
- A service error from the Griffs and a kill from Redl tied things up, 24-24, but the Griffs scored the two points they needed to win the set, 26-24.
Second Set
- The score was tied eight times early in the second set. With the teams knotted at nine points apiece, Canisius scored four straight points to take the lead, 13-9.
- A service error from the Griffs and a block by Laryssa Imbuzeiro and Redl left Niagara trailing by just two points, 13-11.
- A kill from Imbuzeiro and an error from Canisius kept NU within two, 15-13, but the Griffs went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead, 21-13.
- Trailing by nine, 24-15, a kill and an ace from Redl cut the Canisius lead to seven points, but the Griffs scored to win the second set and take a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set
- Kills from Cassie Seminoff and Imbuzeiro and two kills from Redl gave NU a 4-1 lead in the third set.
- Ahead by one point, 7-6, a kill from Redl, a block by Allen and Roberts and an error from the Griffs extended the Niagara lead, 10-6.
- Back-to-back kills from Roberts gave Niagara a five-point advantage, 13-8.
- With a three-point lead, 15-12, a Canisius error and kills from Allen and Roberts put NU ahead by six points, 18-12.
- Canisius came back within two points of the Purple Eagles, 21-19, but kills from Seminoff, Imbuzeiro and Redl put NU ahead, 24-19.
- A service error from the Griffs earned Niagara the set point and the Purple Eagles trailed by just one set, 2-1.
Fourth Set
- The Purple Eagles and the Griffs went back and forth. Canisius went on an early 5-0 run to take an 11-4 lead over the Purple Eagles.
- A block by Allen and Kelly McArthur and two kills from Roberts cut the Griffs' lead to four points, 11-7.
- Trailing by five, 13-8, kills from Roberts and Imbuzeiro and an attack error for the Griffs left the Purple Eagles down by just two points, 13-11.
- The Griffs got ahead by six, 17-11, but a kill from Redl kept NU within five, 17-12.
- Canisius took an eight-point lead, 22-14. Back-to-back kills from Roberts put Niagara within six points of the Griffs, 22-16.
- Roberts scored NU's final point of the match as the Purple Eagles fell to the Griffs, 25-17, in the fourth set and 2-1 in the match.
Eagle's Eye On
- Roberts recorded her 20th double-double of the season with 22 digs and a team-high 21 kills.
- Redl also recorded a double-double with 19 kills and 17 digs.
- Streuer had a double-double for the Purple Eagles with 10 digs and 20 assists.
- Amanda Darling led the Purple Eagles in digs with 33.
- Allen had a team-best three total blocks.
- McArthur added 20 assists for NU.
- Seminoff had 15 kills.
