Michigan State Defeats Women's Basketball, 89-65

East Lansing, MI – Michigan State (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) led wire-to-wire to defeat Niagara (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) 89-65 Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action from the Breslin Center in East Lansing, MI.
 
Maddy Yelle led Niagara with 12 points, followed by Ally Haar with 11 points and team-best eight rebounds. Aaliyah Parker added 10 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks off the bench for the Purple Eagles. 
 
Game Recap
First Quarter
• The Spartans started the game on an 8-0 run forcing Niagara to call an early timeout.
Kyra Grimshaw got Niagara on the board with two free throws, putting the Purple Eagles down six, 8-2, early on. 
Ally Haar scored four of Niagara's eight points in the first, including two from the line. 
• Six of the Purple Eagles' first eight points came from the charity stripe. 
• The Spartans would control the quarter, scoring 28 points and taking a 20-point lead into the second.  
 
Second Quarter
• Niagara's offense improved in the second quarter, going 7-for-19 from the field, after making just one of its
first 10 attempts to start the contest.
• A 7-0 run by the Purple Eagles made it a 48-27 game in favor of the Spartans. 
• The run was highlighted by a 3-pointer from freshman Lexie Roe. Olivia Mason and Haar also contributed two points during Niagara's best offensive stretch of the first half.
• The Purple and White would make three 3-pointers in the second, with Grimshaw and Haar also connecting from downtown. 
 
Third Quarter
• Niagara started the third quarter 5-for-7 from the field, leading to a 5:10 stretch where the Purple Eagles outscored the Spartans 12-9.
• A media timeout wouldn't stop the Purple Eagles hot start to the third as Aaliyah scored in the lane to make the score 59-41.
• A 6-0 run by the Spartans would put Michigan State up 65-41 with just under four minutes remaining in the third. 
• The Spartans would build their lead to 74-46 as time expired in the quarter.  
 
Fourth Quarter
• The Purple Eagles outscored the Spartans 19-15 in the final 10-minutes of play, shooting 40.0 percent from the floor.  
• During the quarter, the Purple and White went on a 10-2 run that lasted 3:49.
Marianna Freeman and Brooklyn Jones led the Niagara offense during the run, scoring five and three points, respectively. 
• As a team, Niagara went 4-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-5 from 3-point land during the run.
• The Spartans would go on to defeat Niagara by a final score of 89-65.
 
Niagara Notes
• Yelle and Aaliyah Parker have now scored 10 or more points in each game this season.
Angel Parker led the Purple Eagles with four assists and six steals. 
• Niagara forced 19 turnovers, resulting in 22 points.
• The Purple Eagles set season-highs with 70 field goal attempts, 26 3-point attempts, 39 rebounds, and 15 assists. 
• The Niagara bench also scored a season-best 34 points. 
• Grimshaw scored a season-high eight points, while Jones and Freeman combined for 11 points off the bench.
