Niagara Splits Second Day With Titans, Lancers

LONGWOOD, Fla. – The Niagara softball team's second day at THE Spring Games ended with a split decision against Detroit Mercy and Longwood. The Purple Eagles defeated the Titans, 5-4, in their first game of the day, but fell in the finale to the Lancers, 16-2 in five innings.

Game One: Niagara 5, Detroit Mercy 4
  • The Titans opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, but a bases loaded situation for Niagara in the top of the second nearly leveled the score again before Detroit Mercy got its third out.
  • In the third, the Purple Eagles would not be denied again. Kaity McInall got things going with a single before Maggie Vesneske hit into a fielder's choice. Rachel Funk got aboard with a single, then moved to third when Heather Haberman's double plated Vesneske. A passed ball and fielding error allowed both Funk and Haberman to come around to make it 3-1 Purple Eagles.
  • A three-spot by Detroit Mercy in the bottom of the third allowed the Titans to retake the lead.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Purple Eagles tied the game when Kendall Watkins doubled in Kelsey Harrigan, setting the score at 4-4.
  • The game remained even until Niagara batted in the seventh. Consecutive fielding errors allowed Maddie Rastello and Shayna Myshrall to get on safely. With two outs against and two runners on, Jenna Patterson singled to score Rastello with the eventual game-winning run.

Game One Stats Spotlight
  • Eight Niagara batters accounted for the team's eight hits.
  • Johnston earned another win, closing out the final 2.0 innings of the game and shutting down the Titans in the process. The senior allowed only two hits and struck out three of the batters she faced.

Game Two: Longwood 16, Niagara 2 (5 innings)
  • Trailing 10-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Purple Eagles mustered some offense and narrowed the gap with the Lancers slightly. McInall drew a leadoff walk to get Niagara started, then took second on a single by Maria Gabriele, who had Avianna Peterson pinch run in her stead. Myshrall eventually doubled home both runners to make it 10-2.

Game Two Stats Spotlight
  • Myshrall, Gabriele, and Rastello each notched one hit in the contest.
