ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Sophomore Raheem Solomon's layup with three seconds remaining lifted the sixth-seeded Purple Eagles to a 56-54 victory over the No. 11 seed Marist Red Foxes in the 2020 Hercules Tires Men's Basketball MAAC Championship First Round.
  
Game Summary
The super sophomore duo of Marcus Hammond and Raheem Solomon combined to score 34 points, including connecting on the game-winning basket, in Niagara's first win at the MAAC Championships since 2017.
 
Hammond drove to the basket, but when three defenders converged on him, he slipped a pass to Solomon who converted a difficult layup for a 56-54 lead. Marist's Michael Cubbage missed a 3-pointer as time expired. The contest featured 21 lead changes and 11 ties with neither team leading by more than four points.   A back and forth opening half set the tone for the 52nd all-time meeting between the Purple Eagles and the Red Foxes. Niagara had the half's largest lead at 16-12 after a Hammond jumper with 9:36 remaining in the first half. Hammond, who was named to the All-MAAC First Team, played a pivotal role in the half finishing with a game-high 12 points. NU closed the half on a 6-2 run, capped with a Hammond jumper, for a 31-30 lead for the 13th lead change of the first half.
 
A 7-2 run by the Purple Eagles pushed their lead to 53-49 with 4:37 remaining in the game. However, the Red Foxes outscored NU 5-1 to tie the game at 54-54 with 32 seconds left.    Eagle's Eye On…
  • Marcus Hammond scored a game-high 20 points for his 10th 20-point game of the season. He grabbed four rebounds and added three assists.
  • Raheem Solomon netted 14 points and had a game-high three steals.
  • Shandon Brown led Niagara with seven rebounds and four assists.
