MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – After dropping game one of its doubleheader, 8-1, against Creighton on Wednesday, the Niagara softball team roared back to win the second game, 13-8.
Game One: Creighton 8, Niagara 1
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the first, but the Purple Eagles mirrored their output in the bottom of the frame. Kelsey Harrigan led off the at-bat with a double into right field. With two out and Harrigan still sitting on second, Maria Gabriele singled into right to score Harrigan and tie the game at 1-1.
Game One Stats Spotlight
- Gabriele was 1-1 with a walk and an RBI to lead Niagara's offense.
Game Two: Niagara 13, Creighton 8
- In the top of the first, Maggie Vesneske got aboard with a single through the right side. After a groundout moved her to second, Vesneske came home when Gabriele hit a two-out single into the left-center gap. Gabriele moved to second on a single by Shayna Myshrall, then scored when Heather Haberman swatted a single of her own. With Myshrall now on third, an error by the shortstop allowed her score and make it a 3-0 game.
- In the bottom of the first, Creighton got a one-out triple, but stranded the runner there as Karsen Cotton got a strikeout and a flyout to end the frame.
- The Purple Eagles were quick to pile on to their lead. A walk to Harrigan, single by Vesneske, and walk to Kendall Watkins loaded the bases for Gabriele with one away. Gabriele delivered a two-RBI double that set the score at 5-0.
- Up 5-1 after three, Vesneske scored again in the fourth to restore the five-run lead for Niagara. After leading off by reaching safely because of an error by the shortstop, Vesneske worked her way around the bases thanks to a single from Watkins and a groundout to second from Haberman.
- In the fifth, Avianna Peterson started the inning with a walk, then proceeded to steal second. A single by Vesneske a and throwing error from the right fielder allowed Peterson to complete the trip home and make it 6-1 Purple Eagles.
- After the Blue Jays scored once in their half of the sixth, the Purple Eagles opened up a 13-2 lead by sending all nine batters to the plate. In all, Niagara scored six runs on four hits, two walks, an error, a sac fly, and a fielder's choice.
Game Two Stats Spotlight
- Harrigan went 2-5 with two runs and an RBI.
- Vesneske was 2-3 with two walks, an RBI, and scored four times.
- Gabriele went 2-3 with a walk, a run scored, and three RBI.
- Myshrall was 3-5, scored once, and had an RBI.
- Haberman was 1-3 with a walk and three RBI.
On Deck
- The Purple Eagles LIU tomorrow at 4:30 when they return to Longwood, Florida for the remainder of the week.
- As a scheduling note, Niagara's contest with Princeton on Sunday, March 15 has been cancelled and will not be made up.
