NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles were defeated by Iona, 70-58, on Saturday afternoon.

Game Recap
First Quarter
  • The Gaels scored five quick points to open the game, but a 3-pointer and two free throws from Emerald Ekpiteta tied the score, 5-5, with over seven minutes to go in the first quarter.
  • Valentina Pepic added six points in the quarter for NU and the score was tied three more times.
  • Niagara had a one-point lead, 14-13, going into the second quarter.
Second Quarter
  • The Purple Eagles went on a 5-0 run to open the second quarter to take a 19-13 lead, but the Gaels scored 13 unanswered points to get ahead, 26-20.
  • Five points from Sydney Faulcon and a triple from Maggie McIntyre put the Purple Eagles down by just one point, 28-27, with a little under two and a half minutes left in the half.
  • Niagara trailed the Gaels narrowly, 35-29, at halftime.
Third Quarter
  • Angel Parker had seven points in the third quarter and Jordan Edwards added four, but the Gaels maintained the lead and were ahead, 56-43, at the end of third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • A bucket from Parker kicked off a 9-0 run for the Purple Eagles, which also included another trey from McIntyre, to cut Iona's lead to just five points, 59-54.
  • With just under two and a half minutes left in the game, McIntyre was fouled at the 3-point line. She sank all three of her free throws to keep Niagara in striking distance of the Gaels, 61-58, but Iona held NU scoreless for the remainder of the quarter to come away with the 70-58 victory.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Ekpiteta led the team in scoring with 12 points. She also had a team-high three steals.
  • Parker added a career-high 11 points and led the team in assists with three.
  • Pepic led the team in rebounding with six rebounds. She also added six points.
  • McIntyre had 10 points for the Purple Eagles.

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles are back on the road next week, taking on Saint Peter's on Thursday, Feb. 13 and Quinnipiac on Saturday, Feb. 15. Both games will air on the ESPN Family of Networks.
