Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Purple Eagles Blank Lakers In Dwyer

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – A 3-0 victory by the Niagara men's hockey team on Friday night gave the Purple Eagles their third straight win in Dwyer Arena. Chad Veltri posted his first shutout in the Purple and White to help down Mercyhurst to open a home-and-home. The squad now sits just two points out of a home playoff series.

Game Recap
  • Jack Billings' 10th goal of the season opened the scoring 10:37 into the contest. The play started in Niagara's defensive zone, where Noah Delmas shoveled the puck to Eric Cooley near the blue line. Cooley went the length of the ice and dropped a perfectly placed pass to Billings on the edge of the slot, who took a quick wrist shot and wired the puck over the left shoulder of Garrett Metcalf and into the cage.

  • Billings paid it forward it the third period to make it a 2-0 game. Chasing Luke Edgerton into the Mercyhurst offensive end, Billings received a pass near the boards and dropped the puck back towards the middle of the ice as Ben Sokay raced to the spot. Sokay picked up the puck, danced around his defender to open up space, then slipped it over the goal line from in tight.

  • With less than four minutes remaining in the third, the Lakers pulled their goalie for a sixth attacker. Niagara recovered possession in its own end thanks to a reach-in by Sokay. Sokay's effort deflected the puck right to Eric Cooley, who gunned it from inside his own blue line for an empty-netter to ice the game.
