Marcus Hammond's career-high 36 points led all scorers as the Purple Eagles were defeated by the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 67-56, on Friday night.
Game Summary
Marcus Hammond's career-day nearly lifted the Purple Eagles to a win in their conference road opener. The sophomore guard from Queens accounted for 36 of Niagara's 56 points and had Niagara in prime position to pull out the win. Hammond connected on his fifth 3-pointer of the game while being fouled; he made the en suing free throw to give NU a 52-51 lead with four minutes remaining in the contest.
The Purple Eagles still led 52-51 with less than three minutes on the clock but the Bobcats reeled off eight straight points over the next two minutes for a 59-52 lead. Hammond halted the run with a deep jumper with 46 seconds remaining. He scored his 36
th point on a layup with 18 seconds left as NU trailed 63-56.
Hammond netted 17 points in the first half to lead all scorers. He scored his 17
th point on a steal and a layup to bring Niagara within one point, 27-26, with 1:28 remaining in the opening frame. His drained a jumper to tie the game at 33-33 at the 16-minute mark of the second half before the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run.
Niagara gradually chipped away at Quinnipiac's lead. Trailing 44-37 with nine minutes left, the Purple Eagles outscored the Bobcats 15-7 over the next four minutes, capped by Hammond's four-point play. NU made 6 of 7 shots with Hammond leading the way with nine points during that stretch.

- Marcus Hammond scored a career-high 36 points on 14 of 22 shooting from the field. He made 5 of 9 3-pointers to tie a career-high. Hammond also grabbed a team-high five rebounds, shared team-high marks in steals with two, and had two assists.
- Greg Kuakumensah swatted a career-high four shots which were a game-high.

- Marcus Hammond's 36 points are the most by a Purple Eagle since Kahlil Dukes scored 37 points at Monmouth on February 4, 2018. His 14 made field goals are the most since Charron Fisher had 14 at Siena February 29, 2008 and are tied with Fisher for ninth most in a conference game in program history.
- Marcus Hammond's 36 points are tied for the most points in the MAAC this season.
- Niagara extended its positive assist-to-turnover ratio to nine straight games and have committed 10 turnovers or less for the seventh straight game.
