LORETTO, Pa. – A goal in each half lifted the Purple Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the Saint Francis (PA) Red Flash on Thursday.
SYNOPSIS
The Purple Eagles' pressure helped them build a 2-0 lead with goals from
Veda Hensel and
Annie Ibey after 55 minutes. After the Red Flash pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the 74
th minute, the Purple Eagles held off the Red Flash in the final 16 minutes to come away with the win.
MOMENTS
- 10' – Kelsey Araujo had Niagara's first scoring chance with her shot in the box saved from a cross by Annie Ibey.
- 19' – Zoe Janes header off a corner went over the crossbar.
- 20' (GOAL) - NU earned a free kick a few yards outside of the box. Veda Hensel curls her shot into the near post.
- 36' – Hensel plays a through ball to Araujo to send her one-on-one with the keeper, but is denied by the keeper.
- 39' - Locas made a quick reaction save on snapshot by Vivien Ruettgers.
- 56' (GOAL) – Defense turned to offense as Niagara scored its second on a counter attack. Hensel plays Araujo down the right flank and her cross into the box is slotted home by Ibey, who beat her marker to the ball.
- 74' (GOAL) – Saint Francis scores from the penalty spot to cut the lead to 2-1.
- 86' – Locas made a save on a back heel flick in the box.
EAGLE'S EYE ON…
- Annie Ibey has scored a goal in six of the last seven games, including in all four games this season.
- Veda Hensel netted her first goal of the season and shared team-high honors in shots with four.
- Sabrina Locas made 10 saves to set a season-high mark.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Niagara's 3-1-0 record is its best start to a season since 2008 (5-1-0).
- Niagara improved to 10-3 all-time against Saint Francis.

- "It absolutely was not our best game, but we got the job done and ultimately that's what counts. We looked sluggish for a large portion of the game but we found ways to generate enough opportunities for the win. It will be nice to get home and play in front of our fans" – head coach Peter Veltri
