SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Niagara was defeated by Incarnate Word, 3-1, in its final game of the Cardinal Classic on Saturday.

Match Summary
First Set
  • Niagara went on an early 4-0 run, including two kills from Mary Redl and one from Caroline Leitch, to take a 7-6 lead over the Cardinals.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Cardinals traded points before Niagara scored three straight points to get ahead, 15-11.
  • Niagara led, 17-14, but the Cardinals scored four straight points to tie the score, 17-17.
  • Incarnate Word led by one point, 20-19, before three consecutive points from the Purple Eagles put them back in the lead, 22-20.
  • Niagara closed out the set strong, earning the 25-23 victory.
Second Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Cardinals were tied, 6-6, early in the set. Incarnate Word, however, soon got ahead, taking a 14-8 lead over NU.
  • The Cardinals maintained their lead for the remainder of the second set to tie the match, 1-1.
Third Set
  • The Purple Eagles led 5-3 to begin the third. NU's first five points included four kills from Redl.
  • Niagara and the Cardinals kept things close throughout the set, with six lead changes.
  • With Niagara trailing by just one point, 20-19, Incarnate Word began to pull away, scoring three straight points to take a 23-19 lead.
  • The Cardinals took the set, 25-21, and took the lead in the match, 2-1.
Fourth Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Cardinals went back and forth before Incarnate Word went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead.
  • Niagara went on a 3-0 run soon after, which included two kills from Jaycie Roberts, to trail by just one point, 12-11
  • Incarnate Word, however, maintained the lead for the remainder of the set. The Cardinals won the set, 25-19, and earned the 3-1 victory.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Redl led Niagara in kills with 15, just one short of her career-high.
  • Leitch recorded a double-double with 14 kills and a team-best 10 digs. Roberts also added 10 digs.
  • Jessica Streuer led NU in assists with 28.
