NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Playing the wind nearly as much as the opponent, the Niagara men's soccer team was edged, 1-0, by Hartford on Friday night. Despite 20 mile-per-hour gusts and being a man down for nearly 70 minutes, the Purple Eagles generated plenty of opportunities in the offensive end.
Match Moments
- 9' - Niagara's first golden chance of the game came courtesy of Matthew Krucko-Moeller. Coming down the left side, the junior let go a shot intended for the far upper corner, only to have it denied by a full extension by the Hartford netminder.
- 22' - After being fouled, Niagara earned a free kick at midfield that was served up into the Hawks' box. Luca Pacheco put a head on the ball, but nodded it just left of the target.
- 24' - Jordan Acevedo was served with a straight red card, putting the Purple Eagles down to 10 men for the remainder of the match.
- 30' - Mackenzie Roach found himself with a look from in close, but touched the ball just wide of the left post.
- 46' - Eight seconds into the second half, Hartford lost Jordan Koduah for the game on a straight red of his own.
- 50' - Kyle Hofschneider drew up a chance of his own as he carried the ball in from the left flank and got himself up front, only to be foiled by the sliding Hawks' goalie.
- 90' - A last-gasp chance for Niagara wound up just short, as the Hawks swarmed the net to pry the ball away after it pinballed off several cleats.
Coach's Corner
- Head coach Bill Boyle: "The wind was a factor today and our guys fought and played hard, but we had an unfortunate red card. We played well and could have earned a goal or two, but going against the wind was very difficult in the second half. We must stop giving up set pieces around the box. We look forward to another great test at home Sunday against Yale."
Up Next
- The Purple Eagles will get right back to it when Yale comes to town on Sunday. Kickoff between Niagara and the Bulldogs will be at 1 p.m.
