Softball Falls To SIUE, Hawai’i

HONOLULU – Returning to the diamond after a two-day hiatus, the Niagara University softball team was topped by Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Hawai'i on day one of the Rainbow Wahine Classic.

SIUE 3, Niagara 1
  • The Cougars scored one time each in the third and fifth innings, but Rachel Funk managed to trim the deficit in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff home run to get Niagara on the board.
  • Trailing once again by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Tara Driver ripped a one-out double to put a runner in scoring position. Maddie Rastello entered to run for Driver and was moved to third when Kendall Watkins singled into right field. Unfortunately Rastello would be stranded by two subsequent flyouts.
  • Seven hitters supplied one hit apiece for Niagara, while Rastello, Watkins, and Rachel Funk each also got aboard via walks.
  • Sierra Bertrand went the distance for the Purple Eagles, giving up eight hits in 7.0 full innings of work inside the circle. She also struck out nine while allowing just four walks.

Niagara 0, Hawai'i 1
  • In another low-scoring affair that has become commonplace for these two schools during the Purple Eagles' trip, the Rainbow Wahine eked out a win in spite of a solid pitching performance by Karsen Cotton.
  • Cotton pitched 1-2-3 innings in the second and fourth, but a third inning inside-the-park homer by Hawai'i proved to be the difference on the scoreboard.
  • Cotton's final line read 6.0 innings pitched, one earned run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
  • Maggie Vesneske went 2-for-2 from the batter's box, while Kelsey Harrigan and Tara Driver each supplied one hit of their own.

On Deck
  • No. 4 Alabama is next up for the Purple Eagles. The Crimson Tide won their opening game at the tournament yesterday over SIUE, 6-4. First pitch from Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium is scheduled for 7 PM ET.
