Niagara Falls To Monmouth Despite Second Half Comeback

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Despite a second half rally, the Purple Eagles were defeated by the Monmouth Hawks, 88-81, on Friday.

Game Recap
  • Down by almost 20 points, 42-25, going into the third quarter, the Purple Eagles rallied. NU cut the Hawks' lead to 10, 50-40, kicking off a 12-0 run, including two 3-pointers from Jai Moore, to tie the score, 50-50. A triple from Maggie McIntyre with less than a minute to go in the quarter gave Niagara its first lead of the game, 53-52. The Hawks quickly tied things up, but a last-second bucket from Jordan Edwards to close out the quarter kept the Purple Eagles ahead, 55-53.
  • The Hawks went on a 5-0 run to open the fourth quarter, quickly reclaiming the lead, 58-55. Despite points from Moore and Emerald Ekpiteta, Monmouth extended its lead, 65-59, with a little over seven and a half minutes remaining in the game. McIntyre sank another three to put NU down by only nine points, 74-65, with over four minutes to play. A bucket from Moore with 1:36 remaining put Niagara down by just seven, 79-72. With 41 seconds left, another trey from McIntyre left Niagara trailing by five, 80-75. The Hawks, however, pulled away late, earning the 88-81 victory over the Purple Eagles.
  • The Hawks held the Purple Eagles to just six points in the first quarter and led NU, 14-6, going into the second quarter. Monmouth continued to stifle the Purple Eagles in the second quarter. The Hawks led Niagara, 42-23, at the end of the first half.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Ekpiteta led the Purple Eagles in scoring with a career-high 22 points. Six of her points came from the free throw line, tying her career-best. She also led the team in rebounds with six and dished out a career-high six assists. 
  • Moore led the team in assists with a career-high eight. She also added 20 points.   
  • McIntyre added 18 points, while Adila Gathers recorded 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Kharysma Bryant had a team-high three steals for Niagara.
