Purple Eagles Win Season Series After Draw At Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – For the first time since the 2013-14 season, the Niagara University men's hockey team won the season series against archrival Canisius following a 2-2 tie at HarborCenter on Friday evening. Justin Kendall and Ludwig Stenlund scored for the Purple Eagles, while Brian Wilson backstopped the team by making 27 saves.

Game Recap
  • After taking the game's first penalty just seven seconds into the game, Niagara kept Canisius off the board by blocking three of the Griffs' five shots. Wilson made one save on the penalty kill while the fifth save went wide and missed the net.
  • Later in the period, Kendall jammed home the puck to give Niagara the early 1-0 lead.
  • On Niagara's third power play of the game, Stenlund made it 2-0 on a designed play at the point. Sitting up top with Noah Delmas opposite him, the freshman took the puck and put it into the far corner for his 17th of the year.
  • Kendall nearly scored again with the Purple Eagles shorthanded late in the second. The sophomore snaked through the defense and got the puck past the goaltender but dinged it off the post.
  • Tied at 2-2, Canisius was whistled and called for a penalty with 1:57 left in regulation. Niagara had several shots, including one that went off the pipe and another that was swatted out of the crease by Canisius' Mazza, but couldn't score before the game went into overtime.
  • With 11.9 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Canisius found itself with a wide-open net but put the puck in the mesh and couldn't recover before Wilson scrambled over and covered it up.
