Volleyball Defeated By Marist In Five-Set Thriller

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles fell to Marist in a five-set thriller on Saturday afternoon.

Match Summary
First Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Red Foxes went back and forth in the first set. Marist had a 17-12 lead before a 3-0 run from NU, kicked off by a kills from Grace Hetterscheidt, put Niagara within two points of the lead, 17-15.
  • Marist was ahead, 22-19, but kills from Hetterscheidt and Cameron Maris once again put NU down by just one points, 22-21.
  • The Red Foxes, however, closed out the set on a 3-0, taking set one, 25-21.
Second Set
  • Niagara took control early in the second set, going on a 7-0 run to lead the Red Foxes, 7-1.
  • The Purple Eagles maintained their lead for the rest of their set, never letting the Red Foxes within more than three points of the lead.
  • Hetterscheidt led the team with four kills during the second set and Maris and Caroline Leitch both added three kills.
  • The Purple Eagles iced the 25-20 set two victory on a service ace from Jessica Streuer.
Third Set
  • The third set was once again a back and forth between the Purple Eagles and the Red Foxes. NU led early, 8-6, but Marist quickly tied things up, 8-8.
  • The Red Foxes took a one-point lead, 10-9, but three straight points from NU, including a kill and an ace from Jaycie Roberts put the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 12-10.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Red Foxes were tied late, 20-20, but Marist closed out the set on a 5-0 run, taking the lead in the match, 2-1.
Fourth Set
  • The fourth set played out much like the first three, with the Purple Eagles and Red Foxes keeping within a few points of each other.
  • Marist led, 13-12, but the Purple Eagles went on a 6-0 run, including two kills from Leitch, to get ahead, 18-13.
  • The Purple Eagles soon extended their lead, 21-14, and went on to win the set, 25-20, to push the match into a fifth and final set.
Fifth Set
  • The Purple Eagles trailed by just one point, 4-3, early in the fifth, but the Red Foxes scored four straight points to take a five-point lead, 8-3.
  • Niagara scored three straight to come back within two points, 8-6.
  • The Red Foxes got ahead by three, 10-7, but the Purple Eagles equalized, scoring three straight points to tie the score, 10-10.
  • Marist, however, allowed the Purple Eagles only one more point, taking the fifth set, 15-11, to win the match.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Hetterscheidt led the Purple Eagles with a career-high 17 kills. She also added a career-high 14 digs.
  • Roberts had her 16th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 22 digs.
  • Leitch also had a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs.
  • Emillie Wright had 22 digs, sharing team-high honors with Roberts.
  • Streuer led the team in assists with 41.
