Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Denver Blanks Niagara In Series Finale

DENVER – The top-ranked Denver Pioneers completed the weekend sweep of the Niagara men's hockey team, winning Saturday night's finale by a 4-0 score. Freshman goaltender Chad Veltri allowed two goals and made 43 saves in just his second collegiate appearance.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles nearly struck four minutes in with Denver a man down. Ludwig Stenlund won the faceoff in the Pioneers' zone, then took a cross-ice pass and patiently waited for an opening to shoot, but rang the shot off the crossbar.
  • Late in the first period, Denver found itself with a partial breakaway, but Jordan Wishman stuck with the play and was able to wrestle the puck away to negate the threat.
  • After Denver took the lead early in the second period, the Purple Eagles went to the penalty kill. The Pioneers turned things up a notch and had three great scoring chances, but Chad Veltri turned the puck aside each time to help kill off the penalty.
  • Early in the third period, Ryan Cox helped deliver some of the best opportunities of the night for the Purple Eagles. Cox got four shots off in sequence, forcing three big saves from the goalie while the defense got in front of the fourth.
