Purple Eagles Have Win Streak Halted

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Canisius on Wednesday evening. The Purple Eagles (4-7-0, 2-1-0 MAAC), looking for their fourth consecutive win, were unable to level after a late goal in the first half.

Match Moments
  • 11' – Niagara's first quality chance came as Hlaku Gay cut through the interior of the Canisius defense to touch pass the ball up for Rodrigo Almeida. Almeida pounded the ball off the woodwork but was also whistled for being ahead offside.
  • 13' – Savoni made his first save of the night on a long, high ball played in from the left side. Savoni stretched to reel it in and prevent it from slipping through top shelf.
  • 55' – Niagara earned consecutive corner kicks 15 minutes into the second half. The first attempt was headed out by the Griffs' back line. The second ball from Absalom Solorio-Villalpando was booted and cleared to midfield.
  • 70' – The Golden Griffins had a chance to double their lead after a turnover in the Niagara end, but Josh Savoni kept it a one-goal game with an athletic save to reject the low, right-side shot.
  • 80' – Matthew Krucko-Moeller rang a pair of shots off the iron as the Purple Eagles kicked things up a notch late in the half in an attempt to find an equalizer.

Coach's Corner
  • Head coach Bill Boyle: "We have to get better at keeping possession as well as playing faster. Our defensive effort was great. We need better execution in the front third, so we will get back to work tomorrow.  We can't get caught up in officiating either and must stay more disciplined.  Credit to Canisius. They had a great game plan."

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles return to Niagara Field on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. kick against the Monmouth Hawks. The team will be hosting Alumni Weekend as part of its 50th anniversary celebration, and will recognize alumni, including the members of the original 1969 squad.
