Niagara Holds Bobcats Scoreless In Alumni Weekend Draw

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Stealing the show with a nine-save performance, goalkeeper Nick Burke earned a 110-minute shutout of Quinnipiac to salvage a point for the Niagara men's soccer team. The Purple Eagles and Bobcats played to a scoreless draw on a Saturday night that honored and celebrated the legacy of the program's former players.

Match Moments
  • Prior to the start of the game, the team held a moment of silence for 11 former Purple Eagles who built the program up in its earliest years.
  • 10' – The first shot on net for either team came courtesy of Rodrigo Almeida, but his attempt was saved on a brilliant, athletic stop from the Bobcat keeper.
  • 33' – Hlaku Gay earned a chance from in close, but poked the ball wide and out of play.
  • 42' – Quinnipiac mustered up a shot on target after several minutes of back-and-forth, but Burke was up to the task, denying the final chance for either team before the break.
  • At halftime, all alumni in attendance were invited onto the field to receive special scarves to mark the 50th anniversary of the program.
  • 59' – A four-minute sequence that saw Quinnipiac hold the ball deep in the Niagara end wound up fruitless for the Bobcats. Burke made two saves, Jacob Myer blocked a shot, and the defense cleared out a corner kick to stifle the onslaught.
  • 83' – Luca Pacheco and Absalom Solorio-Villalpando both had good looks late in the second half, but Pacheco's shot was deflected while Solorio-Villalpando's tough ball was stopped by the goalkeeper.
  • 98' – Burke made a pair of saves in the first overtime period to extend the game.
  • 100' – Niagara earned one corner and had one shot in the third frame, but watched it sail wide.
  • 110' – With time ticking away, Myer had a great chance to steal the extra two points, but the opportunity sailed wide and out of play.

Coach's Corner
  • Head coach Bill Boyle: "It was an absolute great day with so many alumni on hand to watch us compete. It was unfortunate to not get three points, but sometimes earning one against a very good team tells you more. This group of men is heading the right direction and made over 50 years worth of alumni proud."

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles ride to Siena for midweek action against the Saints. Wednesday's game will kick off at 3 p.m. from Loudonville, New York.
