Iona Tops Men’s Soccer In Final Minute

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Niagara men's soccer team fell, 3-2, at Iona on Wednesday afternoon. The Purple Eagles got goals from Rafael Freitas and Rodrigo Almeida, but couldn't walk away with a point after a late red card.

Match Moments
  • 29' – Niagara won its first corner and was able to sustain possession long enough to earn a second. On the second set piece, Absalom Solorio-Villalpando laced a rocket about seven feet off the ground, where a leaping Rafael Freitas was able to locate it and redirect it in to tie the game at 1-1.
  • 61' – Mackenzie Roach turned the ball on net during a scramble in front of the Iona net. Neither team was able to control it until Roach's shot was smothered.
  • 62' – The Purple Eagles continued to tilt the field in their favor, winning a corner kick with a chance to tie the game. Hlaku Gay hooked a good ball in, but put a bit too much muscle behind the kick, as it sailed past the goal mouth and out of danger.
  • 67' – On a free kick, Jordan Acevedo picked up the bouncing ball just feet from the goal line but headed it wide left.
  • 85' – After being forced down to 10 men with 10 minutes left in regulation, the Purple Eagles earned a free kick from 35 yards out. The ball found Rodrigo Almeida, who was able to put a head on it and slot it home to equalize the game at 2-2.

Coach's Corner
  • Head coach Bill Boyle: "We had a couple bad mistakes in the first half and a harsh decision in the second. Regardless, we still came back despite being down a man before they were given a questionable penalty. At the end of the day we had too many mistakes to deserve the win."
