Purple Eagles Down The Jaspers For First MAAC Win Of The Season

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles earned their first conference win of the season on Saturday, defeating the Manhattan Jaspers, 61-51.

Game Recap
  • Manhattan led early in the first quarter but Jai Moore hit two 3-pointers to give Niagara the lead, 11-10. Moore added two more points in the first quarter, while Adila Gathers and Maggie McIntyre each had four points. Niagara trailed narrowly, 20-18, going into the second quarter.
  • The Jaspers went on a 5-0 run to open the second quarter, but the Purple Eagles answered with a 6-0 run, including four points from Valentina Pepic, which put Niagara down by only one point, 25-24. The Jaspers still led narrowly, 30-27, at the end of the second quarter.
  • The Purple Eagles took the lead, 38-37, after Pepic converted a 3-point play with a little over two and a half minutes to play in the third quarter. Jordan Edwards and Emerald Ekpiteta each added two points to give the Purple Eagles a 42-40 lead going into the final quarter of play.
  • The score was tied twice early in the third quarter, but a trey from Kharysma Bryant and a bucket from Moore gave NU the 49-46 advantage. The Jaspers quickly came back to tie the score, 49-49, but the Purple Eagles were undaunted, going on a 7-0 run to get ahead of Manhattan, 56-49. Niagara maintained the lead for the remainder of the game, earning the 61-51 victory over the Jaspers.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Moore led all scorers with 15 points. She also had three steals, four assists and one block.
  • Ekpiteta recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and a career-high 13 points. She went a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
  • McIntyre led the team in steals with four. She also added 11 points for the Purple Eagles.
  • Gathers and Bryant each recorded six rebounds.
