Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Weekend Finale Goes Wrong Way For Niagara

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Despite being gifted six power play opportunities, the Niagara men's hockey team suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of the RIT Tigers on Saturday night. Niko Kovachis tied things up in the third for the Purple Eagles (8-11-2, 7-6-2) with the man advantage, but the hosts sealed the victory with a power play goal of their own with 0.1 seconds remaining in regulation.

Game Recap
  • In the opening frame, Niagara outshot the Tigers, 13-7 but couldn't cash in despite having four power play chances.
  • Niagara's best chances of the second period came with 5:17 and 4:56 to play. After Justin Kendall was denied at the doorstep following a quick pass from Reed Robinson, the puck went to the far end of the ice and back again. On the ensuing rush, Ludwig Stenlund's saucy toe-drag gave him a chance in close, but the puck was again gloved and held by Logan Drackett for a whistle.
  • With 14 seconds left in the period, Brian Wilson sprawled to deny RIT on a 2-on-1 break. The Purple Eagles corralled the rebound and flew back on a 4-on-1 but were turned aside by an equally flashy save.
  • Niagara finally broke through with RIT shorthanded with eight minutes gone in the third. Niko Kovachis earned his second goal in as many games to square things up for the Purple Eagles.
  • With 2:24 left in regulation, the Tigers were called on a tripping penalty against Eric Cooley. Niagara had a chance but a scramble in front put bodies on the ice and in the fracas, the Purple Eagles got called for an infraction of their own. After pressuring and holding the zone, RIT clinched it by scoring with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. The officials tacked another 1.3 on after a review, but it had no impact on the result.

Up Next
  • Niagara heads to Worcester, Mass. next weekend to face off against Holy Cross for the second time this season. Puck drop for both Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan. 12 is slated for 7 p.m.
