Purple Eagles Open MAAC Play With Loss To Marist

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles women's basketball team fell to Marist, 87-58, in its MAAC opener on Thursday.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles opened the game on a 6-0 run thanks to two 3-pointers from Jai Moore. Marist quickly caught up and took the lead, 10-8. Maggie McIntyre sank a trey with a little over four minutes left in the first quarter to put NU back on top, 11-10. Marist led narrowly at the end of the quarter, 16-13.
  • Marist went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter, extending its lead over Niagara, 27-13. Moore, Valentina Pepic and Maddy Yelle all contributed in the second quarter, but the Red Foxes had a comfortable 48-23 lead going into halftime.
  • Six points from Kharysma Bryant helped cut the Red Foxes' lead, 52-31, with a little under six minutes to play in the third quarter. Bryant had eight total points in the third quarter, but Niagara trailed Marist, 67-40, going into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • Ally Haar and Moore hit back-to-back threes for Niagara in the fourth quarter, putting the score at 76-52 with just under five minutes left in the game, but the Purple Eagles were not able to overcome the Red Foxes, falling to Marist 87-58 to snap their three-game win streak in the Gallagher Center.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Moore led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 17 points and in rebounding with seven rebounds.
  • Pepic added nine points, tying her career-high, while Bryant had eight points. Yelle also tied her career-high with six points.
  • Dagny Davidsdottir recorded six rebounds for NU and Emerald Ekpiteta added five rebounds.
  • Moore and McIntyre each had a team-best four assists.
