Niagara Improves To 3-1 In MAAC Play With Victory Over Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles improved to 3-1 in conference play with a 58-46 victory over the Iona Gaels on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles and the Gaels went back and forth in the first quarter. The Gales had a 6-4 lead over NU early, before Maggie McIntyre sank a 3-pointer to put the Purple Eagles in the lead, 7-6. A trey and two free throws from Jai Moore kept Niagara in the lead, 12-11. Ally Haar hit a three in the first quarter and Moore added four more points and Niagara trailed by just one point, 22-21, going into the second quarter.
  • NU went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter, which included four points from Kharysma Bryant, three points from Adila Gathers and three more points from Moore, to take a 31-24 lead over the Gaels. The Purple Eagles led Iona, 33-28, at the end of the first half.
  • Three points from Emerald Ekpiteta put the Purple Eagles ahead of the Gaels, 36-28, but Iona went on an 8-0 run to tie the score, 36-36. The Gaels led the Purple Eagles by just one point, 39-38, at the end of the third quarter.
  • Gathers converted a 3-point play to open scoring for Niagara in the fourth quarter, putting the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 41-39. The Purple Eagles dominated the remainder of the quarter, holding the Gaels to only seven fourth quarter points to earn the 58-46 victory and sweep their first MAAC road trip of the season.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Moore led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 17 points. She led the team in blocks with two, which is a career-high.
  • Ekpiteta led the team in rebounding with nine rebounds and in steals with four, which is a career-high. She also added nine points.
  • Gathers recorded a career-high 14 points. She also had five rebounds and three steals
