NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's volleyball team heads to Connecticut this weekend to close out non-conference play in the Hartford Invitational. The Purple Eagles face the Hartford Hawks on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m. and takes on Bucknell (11:00 a.m) and Brown (5:00 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Last Time Out
- The Purple Eagles traveled to Kent, Ohio last weekend to take part in the Golden Flashes Classic, falling to Morgan State, Fort Wayne and Kent State.
- The Purple Eagles kicked off the season at the Blue and White Classic in Buffalo, where Jaycie Roberts was named to the All-Tournament Team. The sophomore defensive specialist/outside hitter recorded 18 kills and a team-high 29 digs over the team's three matches, averaging 2.00 kills per set and 3.22 digs per set. She also recorded one service ace, one solo block and two assists.
- Caroline Leitch currently leads the team in kills with 37 while Emillie Wright has a team-leading 64 digs.
Across the Net
Hartford Hawks (2-3, 0-0 America East)
- Hartford is coming off play in the Battle of Connecticut last weekend, defeating Central Connecticut and defending MAAC champions Fairfield in straight sets. The Hawks fell to Sacred Heart in five sets.
- Lacey Zadra and Jenna Bridges currently sit atop the America East leaders in blocks per set, averaging 1.23 and 1.18, respectively.
- Niagara leads the all-time series with Hartford, 3-2. The Purple Eagles won the most recent matchup in last season's Hartford Invitational, defeating the Hawks in four sets.
Bucknell Bison (4-2, 0-0 Patriot League)
- Last weekend, the Bison traveled to Brooklyn to take part in the Terrier Invitational, hosted by St. Francis Brooklyn. Bucknell fell to Cal State Fullerton and earned victories against Delaware State and NJIT.
- Sophie Bullard leads the team and the Patriot League in kills per set (3.61), while Mimi Richards is averaging a conference-leading 1.71 blocks per set.
- Bucknell leads the all-time series over Niagara, 6-3. This will be the first matchup between the two teams since Aug. 26, 2012, when the Purple Eagles downed the Bison in four sets as part of the La Salle Invitational.
Brown Bears (2-1, 0-0 Ivy League)
- Brown opened its season last weekend in Providence, earning wins against Fairleigh Dickinson and UMass Lowell before falling to Providence as part of the Friar Classic.
- Senior right-side hitter Sabrina Stillwell was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Friar Classic after averaging 4.55 kills per set and 3.55 digs per set last weekend.
- This will be the first all-time meeting between the Purple Eagles and the Brown Bears.

- The Purple Eagles start conference play next weekend on the road, battling former head coach Vilis Ozols and the Siena Saints on Sept. 15 before taking on the Marist Red Foxes on Sept. 16. Both matches will start at 1:00 p.m.
