NU Defeated By Morgan State In Straight Sets

KENT, Ohio – The Niagara women's volleyball team fell to Morgan State in straight sets in its first match of the Golden Flashes Classic on Friday.

Match Summary
  • The Purple Eagles (0-4) started off strong in the first set, taking a 6-2 lead over the Bears (2-4), with help from two kills from Alex Paris and one from Grace Hetterscheidt. Morgan State bounced back quickly, going on a 5-0 run to take a 7-6 lead over NU. The Purple Eagles and the Bears went back and forth, but the Bears began to pull away, taking a 22-13 lead over Niagara. The score was tied a total of eight times in the first set, which Morgan State went on to win, 25-18. Jaycie Roberts and Cameron Maris led NU with three kills each in set one.
  • Niagara once again took the early lead in the second set; two kills from Hetterscheidt, one from Paris and Mary Redl and a service ace from Roberts put NU up, 5-3. The Purple Eagles and the Bears kept things close before Morgan State took a 22-17 lead. The Purple Eagles, however, went on a 5-0 run and trailed by only one point, 22-21. Morgan State held onto its lead, but NU quickly tied things up, 24-24, with kills from Caroline Leitch and Emillie Wright. The Bears narrowly claimed the second set, 26-24. Redl had a team-high four kills in the second set.
  • Morgan State jumped out to an 11-5 lead over the Purple Eagles in the third set. NU and the Bears scored back and forth before the Bears went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead, 20-9. Two kills from Redl and a service ace from Hetterscheidt brought the Purple Eagles back within view of the lead, 20-12. Morgan State once again began pulling away from NU and led 23-15, but the Purple Eagles went on a 4-0 scoring run to come within five points of the lead, 23-19. NU, however, was held scoreless for the remainder of the match and the Bears came away with the 25-19 set win and 3-0 match victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • Redl led the team in kills, averaging 4.00 kills per set. She recorded a total of eight kills, which is a career-high.
  • Roberts averaged a team-best 4.33 digs per set, while also averaging 2.33 kills per set.
  • Redl and Roberts each recorded 8.0 points.
  • Jessica Streuer led Niagara in assists with 16 to tie her career-high.
