Baseball Falls To Monmouth, 8-7

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara baseball team dropped a close game to Monmouth, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon.

Game Recap
  • In the bottom of the first, Gallup hit one out of the park on the first pitch of the game from the Hawks to give Niagara a 1-0 lead.
  • NU extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Greg Cullen singled to right field, scoring Gallup. A score from Benny Serrano put the Purple Eagles up, 3-0.
  • Monmouth bounced back in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs to take its first lead of the game, 5-3.
  • Niagara answered quickly in the bottom of the seventh. Gallup singled up the middle, plating Darian Blanks. With bases loaded, Battaglia reached base on a throwing error by the Hawks' third baseman and Gallup and Serrano scored to put NU back in the lead, 7-5.
  • A two-run homerun from the Hawks in the top of the eighth tied up the score, 7-7.
  • Monmouth scored once in the ninth to take an 8-7 lead and held the Purple Eagles off in the bottom of the inning to come away with the series sweep.

Inside the Numbers
  • Gallup led Niagara with a season-high three hits and three runs scored.
  • Battaglia and Gallup led the Purple Eagles in RBIs with two each.
  • Wyatt Olson and Philippe Langlois each had one hit for extra bases.
  • Ben Erwin (3-2) took the loss on the mound. He fanned two and allowed four earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched.
