Softball Swept By Manhattan

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Niagara softball team dropped a pair of games to Manhattan on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Manhattan 5, Niagara 0
  • The Jaspers (17-21, 2-8 MAAC) took a 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles (10-17, 2-6 MAAC) in the bottom of the third inning and never relinquished it.
  • A three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth cemented Manhattan's 5-0 victory.
  • Niagara did not record any hits in game one.
  • In the circle, Sierra Bertrand (5-10) struck out eight batters, one short of her season-high.

Game 2: Manhattan 3, Niagara 2 (9 innings)
  • Niagara took the early lead in game two. Jerri Ann Orfano doubled to right center, scoring Sarah Trifoso to put NU up, 1-0.
  • Manhattan scored twice in the bottom of the second to take the lead, 2-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, a sacrifice bunt from Jennifer Timm sent Kendall Watkins home for the game-tying run, 2-2.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Jaspers both went scoreless in the seventh, forcing the game into extra innings. An RBI single from Manhattan in the bottom of the ninth earned the Jaspers the walk-off win.
  • Orfano led Niagara with two hits.
  • Orfano and Timm each recorded one RBI.
  • Kelsey Harrigan had one stolen base.
  • Jennifer Szilagyi earned the start in the circle, striking out four in 6.0 innings pitched. Emily Johnston (1-3) took the loss. She struck out two in 2.1 innings pitched.
