Purple Eagles Sweep The Peacocks

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Niagara softball team swept a doubleheader with Saint Peter's on Sunday, including an 8-0 shutout of the Peacocks in the second game.

Game 1: Niagara 3, Saint Peter's 2 (10 innings)
  • The Purple Eagles (12-27, 4-6 MAAC) got on the board in the top of the third inning. A sacrifice fly from Kendall Watkins scored Sarah Trifoso and a ground out from Jennifer Timm sent Kelsey Harrigan home to give NU a 2-0 lead over the Peacocks (5-32, 0-10 MAAC).
  • Saint Peter's came back to tie things up, 2-2, in the bottom of the third inning. A defensive battle ensued and both teams remained scoreless through the seventh inning, forcing the game into extra innings.
  • In the top of the tenth, Timm doubled, sending Watkins home for the game-winning run.
  • Harrigan led the Purple Eagles with three hits.
  • Timm had a team-high two RBIs.
  • Sierra Bertrand (6-10) earned the victory in the circle. She struck out a career-high 13 batters and allowed only four hits in 9.1 innings pitched.

Game 2: Niagara 8, Saint Peter's 0
  • Niagara jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first inning. Jerri Ann Orfano singled to center field, scoring Harrigan. Heather Haberman doubled to left field, plating Orfano and giving the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead.
  • An RBI single from Haberman in the top of the third extended NU's lead, 3-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, Taylor Moody doubled to left field to send Erika Siegel home. Watkins then singled to center field, driving home two runs to put NU up 6-0 on the Peacocks.
  • A two-run homerun from Moody in the top of the seventh cemented NU's 8-0 victory.
  • Orfano led the Purple Eagles with three hits.
  • Haberman and Watkins each had a team-best two RBIs.
  • Jennifer Szilagyi (2-5) earned the complete game shutout victory in the circle. She struck out six and allowed just five hits.

  • The Purple Eagles host St. Bonaventure for their home opener at Niagara Field on Tuesday, April 24. NU and the Bonnies will play a doubleheader with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
