Softball Falls To Penn, Western Michigan

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Purple Eagles closed out the Under Armour Showcase with losses to Penn and Western Michigan on Wednesday.

Game 1: Penn 7, Niagara 5
  • The Quakers (1-7) dominated the first half of the game, taking a 7-0 lead over the Purple Eagles (5-12) after the first three innings of play.
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the top of the fourth. Sarah Trifoso singled to center field, scoring Rachel Funk. NU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth after a single from Kendal Watkins scored Trifoso and Margaret Vesneske. The Purple Eagles trailed Penn by only four runs, 7-3.
  • In the top of the seventh, Vesneske singled to second base to send Jennifer Timm and Jerri Ann Orfano home, but NU could not capitalize the rest of the inning and fell to the Quakers, 7-5.
  • Funk led the team with three hits and Watkins and Vesneske each recorded two RBIs.
  • In the circle, Karsen Cotton (2-3) struck out three and allowed six earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched.

Game 2: Western Michigan 2. Niagara 1
  • In the top of the fourth, with two runners on base, Orfano reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Watkins to give Niagara a 1-0 lead over the Broncos.
  • Western Michigan answered in the bottom of the fourth with a 2-RBI single to take a 2-1 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Both teams remained scoreless for the rest of the game and Western Michigan came away with the narrow victory.
  • Heather Haberman led Niagara with two hits and Orfano had one RBI.
  • Sierra Bertrand (2-4) threw a complete game for the Purple Eagles. She struck out three batters and allowed only five hits.
