CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Purple Eagles split their first day at the Under Armour Showcase, defeating Penn, 8-, and falling to South Dakota State, 9-6.
Game 1: Niagara 8, Penn 6 (8 innings)
- The Purple Eagles (5-10) started off hot with a three-run homer from Kendall Watkins in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Quakers (0-6).
- Three scores from Penn in the bottom of the fifth tied things up, 3-3. Niagara, however, quickly answered in the top of the sixth. Heather Haberman went yard. Brianna Clark then singled to left field to send Alexis Gibson home and give NU a 5-3 lead.
- The Quakers came back to tie the score, 5-5, in the bottom of the sixth. Both teams went scoreless in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
- In the top of the eighth inning, Haberman doubled to right field, sending Watkins home. Jerri Ann Orfano then doubled to score Haberman. An RBI single from Maria Gabriele gave the Purple Eagles a three-run lead, 8-5.
- Penn scored once more in the bottom of the eighth but Niagara maintained control of the game and came away with the victory.
- Haberman led the Purple Eagles with three hits and Watkins had a team-high three RBIs. Both also had two runs scored.
- Emily Johnston (1-2) picked up her first win of the season in the circle. She struck out one and allowed zero hits and two earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched.
Game 2: South Dakota State 9, Niagara 6
- A three-run homerun from the Jackrabbits (8-5) in the top of the first inning gave SDSU a quick 3-0 lead over the Purple Eagles. Scores in the second and the fourth extended SDSU's lead, 5-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Purple Eagles got on the board. Orfano doubled to right center to score Watkins. Gabriele then hit a sacrifice fly to send Haberman home and an RBI single from Rachel Funk put NU down by only two runs, 5-3, at the end of the fourth inning.
- The Jackrabbits, however, extended their lead with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. They led the Purple Eagles, 9-3, midway through the sixth inning.
- Niagara added a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth; Gibson grounded out to the pitcher to score Morgan Genovese. RBI singles from Gibson and Funk in the seventh put NU down by three, 9-6, but the Purple Eagles were not able to overcome SDSU's lead.
- Watkins led Niagara with three hits and Funk and Gibson each had a team-best two RBIs.
- Sierra Bertrand (2-3) started in the circle. She struck out two in 5.0 innings pitched.
