Baseball Completes Michigan State Series With 12-10 Victory

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Niagara baseball team closed out its four-game series at Michigan State with a 12-10 victory over the Spartans on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • Michigan State took the lead, 2-0, in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run homerun. The Purple Eagles answered in the fourth. Own Dziados hit a sac fly to left field to score McCauley. Olson then doubled to right center to send Greg Cullen home and tie the score, 2-2.
  • The Spartans scored once in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead, 3-2.
  • In the top of the fifth, McCauley went yard, also scoring Julian Gallup. The Purple Eagles took their first lead of the game, 4-3.
  • A triple and a sac bunt from the Spartans in the bottom of the fifth put them back in the lead, 5-4.
  • An RBI single from Olson in the sixth inning knotted the score at 6-6.
  • The Purple Eagles began to pull away in the seventh inning. Peter Battaglia flied out to right field to score Michael Gabriele and another run from McCauley put NU back on top, 7-5. The Purple Eagles extended their lead, 8-5, in the top of the eighth with an RBI single form Gabriele.
  • Michigan State scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, coming within one run of Niagara's lead, 8-7.
  • The Purple Eagles, however, had a dominant ninth inning. Benny Serrano singled up the middle to score both Dziados and Olson. McCauley then singled up the middle to send Serrano and Steven Kokoski home and give the Purple Eagles the 12-7 lead.
  • The Spartans added on three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Purple Eagles held steady, earning the 12-10 victory to split their four-game series with Michigan State.

Inside the Numbers
  • McCauley led Niagara with a career-high four RBIs. He also had a team-high three runs scored and added three hits.
  • Olson had a team-high four hits for NU, which is his single-game career-high. Two of Olson's hits were doubles.
  • Dziados, Olson and Serrano each had two RBIs.
  • Jackson Jones started on the mound, fanning three in 4.1 innings pitched. Ben Erwin (3-1) earned the victory and Cody Eckerson earned the save.
