Softball Splits First Day At Cleveland State Dome Tournament

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Niagara softball team split its first day at the Cleveland State Dome Invitational, defeating Cleveland State, 10-4, and falling to Bowling Green, 4-0.

Game 1: Niagara 10, Cleveland State 4
  • Niagara (1-1) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning. Maria Gabriele singled down the left field, scoring Kelsey Harrigan and Taylor Moody. Rachel Funk singled down the right field line to score Jerri Ann Orfano. With two runners on base, Margaret Vesneske singled and advanced to second on an error by CSU's second baseman, sending Gabriele and Funk home.
  • The Vikings (0-1) scored once in the third, but Niagara maintained their lead. In the fourth, Orfano flied out to right field to score Harrigan and give the Purple Eagles a 6-1 lead.
  • A homerun from CSU halved Niagara's lead, 6-3, in the bottom of the fourth but the Purple Eagles answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth; Sarah Trifoso doubled to score Vesneske and Funk and Harrigan hit her first collegiate homerun.
  • CSU added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but Niagara stayed in command, adding its final run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Funk led Niagara with three RBIs and Gabriele, Funk and Trifoso each had two RBI.
  • Harrigan had a team-high three runs.
  • In the circle, Sierra Bertrand (1-0) struck out five batters in 5.0 innings pitched.

Game 2: Bowling Green 4, Niagara 0
  • Niagara held Bowling Green scoreless until the fifth inning, when BGU scored to take a 1-0. Bowling Green added on three runs in the seventh inning and came away with the 4-0 win.
  • Trifoso had NU's only hit of the game.
  • Jennifer Szilaagyi (0-1) fanned three batters in 6.1 innings pitched.
