Purple Eagles Fall To Grand Canyon and Houston Baptist

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Purple Eagles fell to Grand Canyon, 16-0, and Houston Baptist, 14-8, in their second day at the GCU Purple Classic on Saturday.

Game 1: Grand Canyon 16, Niagara 0 (5 Innings)
  • The Antelopes (6-8) dominated the game from start to finish, scoring eight runs in the first inning, six in the fourth and two in the fifth. The game was ended after five innings.
  • Kelsey Harrigan and Erika Siegel each had one hit for the Purple Eagles. Harrigan's hit was a double.
  • In the circle, Sierra Bertrand (2-1) allowed three earned runs and eight total runs in 2.0 innings pitched.

Game 2: Houston Baptist 14, Niagara 8
  • The Purple Eagles (3-5) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With bases loaded, Jerri Ann Orfano grounded out to second base, scoring Harrigan. Heather Haberman then grounded out to second to send Margaret Vesneske home.
  • The Huskies had a huge first inning, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first to take an 8-2 lead over the Purple Eagles. Houston Baptist tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second to extend its lead, 12-2.
  • In the top of the third, Orfano flied out to center field, scoring Harrigan. Niagara trailed, 12-3, at the end of the third.
  • A solo homerun from the Huskies in the bottom of the fourth put them up on the Purple Eagles, 13-3.
  • Niagara began to close the gap in the fifth inning. Orfano singled up the middle to score Sarah Trifoso. Haberman then reached base on a fielder's choice and Vesneske scored. Jennifer Timm singled to left field to score Kendall Watkins for NU's final run of the inning. The Purple Eagles added two runs in the sixth and trailed the Huskies by five runs, 13-8, going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The Huskies scored once more in the bottom of the sixth and held the Purple Eagles scoreless in the seventh to come away with the 14-8 win.
  • Orfano led the Purple Eagles with three RBIs and Harrigan had a team-best two hits. Harrigan, Vesneske and Trifoso each scored two runs.
  • In the circle, Karsen Cotton (1-1) struck out three and allowed six earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched.
