EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Niagara women's soccer team was defeated by the Michigan State Spartans, 2-0, in its opening game of the season Friday afternoon.

Game Recap
- The first period was a defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Spartans. Both teams went scoreless and NU blocked two of MSU's six shots.
- The Purple Eagles tried to create chance on offense in the second period. Kelsey Lafferty took Niagara's first shot of the period, and second shot of the game, in the 50th minute but it was saved by the Spartans' goalkeeper.
- Michigan State got on the board in the 54th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
- Two shots from Kelsey Araujo in the 57th and 64th minutes and one from Breanne Guevara in the 63rd minute could not slip by the Michigan State goalkeeper.
- The Spartans scored again in the 68th minute of the game to take a 2-0 lead and, despite shots from Araujo and Eva Bachmann late in the game, the Purple Eagles were not able to overcome Michigan State.
Inside the Numbers
- Michigan State outshot Niagara 6-1 in the first period and the shots were even, 6-6, in the second period.
- Araujo led Niagara with three shots and two shots on goal and Bachmann had two shots, both of which were on goal.
- Starting goalkeeper Shania van Nuland recorded two saves in the first period and Locas, who made her collegiate debut in the second period, had two saves and allowed both of Michigan State's goals.
