Casey Makes 11 Saves In Loss At Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles men's soccer team was defeated 5-0 in its annual Battle of the Bridge matchup against the Canisius Golden Griffins. Steve Casey tied his career-high with 11 saves, but Canisius scored three times in the final 10 minutes after taking a 2-0 lead into halftime Wednesday night at the Demske Sports Complex.

Game Recap
  • Luca Pacheco picked up the first scoring chance of the evening for Niagara, winding up for a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a Canisius defender.
  • The Golden Griffins opened the scoring just past the ten-minute mark. Alex Grattarola touched a free kick towards the goal. His shot richocheted away off a Niagara defender right to the foot of his teammate Filippo Tamburini, who caught Niagara goalkeeper Steve Casey out of position for the open goal.
  • Canisius doubled its lead in the 23rd minute as Grattarola headed a shot on goal off a set piece through the outstretched arms of Casey.
  • Bautista Pedezert and Zulfikar Karimi both put shots on goal in the first half, but neither got past Canisius keeper Marco Trivellato.
  • Borna Juracic had Niagara's best chance of the second half, getting a header directed on goal that was deflected away by the Canisius defense.
  • Canisius' Troy Brady added two insurance goals in the closing 10 minutes and Will Pauls made it 5-0 in the 89th minute.

  • Steve Casey tied his career-high with 11 saves in the loss. Back in his freshman season, Casey made 11 saves against Canisius back on Nov. 5, 2014.
  • Casey's 11 saves bested his previous high from the 2017 season when he stopped eight at James Madison.
  • Bautista Pedezert led the Purple Eagles with three shots, followed by Hector Solorio Villalpando at two.
