LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Niagara women's soccer team defeated No. 9 Canisius 4-3 in penalty kicks on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the MAAC Championships.

Game Recap
- The first 90 minutes of regulation were a defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Griffs, both teams remaining scoreless to force the game into overtime.
- Despite creating offensive chances in the first and second overtime periods, Niagara and Canisius remained scoreless.
- The game went into penalty kicks. The Griffs made the first, with Niagara quickly coming back to tie it with a good PK from Bayley Sullivan.
- The Purple Eagles and the Griffs traded off good penalty kicks, with good kicks from Kelsey Araujo and Naomi Giovino to tie keep things tied up, 3-3. Selena Mangoni iced the win for Niagara with a shootout goal.
Coach's Corner
- "We played extremely well today," said head coach Peter Veltri. "We dominated from start to finish. Defensively, we were amazing and limited them to one opportunity. We generated quality opportunities, but just couldn't find the back of the net. I need to give a little credit to Canisius' goalie for keeping them in the game today. I was very proud of our five penalty kick takers for taking on the additional pressures and responsibilities today."

- Mangoni and Hailey Bicknell led the Purple Eagles with four shots each and Bicknell and Giovino had a team-high two shots on goal each.
- Niagara outshot Canisius 7-2 in the second half of the game and 14-6 overall.

- Niagara's last trip to the MAAC tournament quarterfinals was in 2014, when the Purple Eagles also defeated Canisius in the first round to advance.
