KISSIMMEE, FL. – In the first two of four games at the Rebel Spring Games this weekend, the Purple Eagles softball team fell to both the Creighton Bluejays and the Akron Zips. Niagara fell 10-1 to Creighton in the first game of the day before a 6-0 defeat against Akron Saturday afternoon.
Creighton 10, Niagara 1 The Purple Eagles and Bluejays played a tightly-contested game through the first three innings. Niagara surrendered two runs early but made it a 2-1 game in the top of the fourth inning. However, an eight-run Creighton outburst in the bottom of the fourth broke open the game for a 10-1 Creighton win.

Sarah March, who led the team with a .733 slugging percentage at the Cleveland State Dome Tournament, continued her power hitting with two doubles in a 2-for-2 effort. March was unable to score after a second-inning double, but her second hit of the game was followed up by an RBI double from
Jennifer Timm.
In the bottom of the fourth, however, Creighton scored eight runs on five hits and four walks. Creighton scored three runs to take a 6-1 lead before the Bluejays' Mileah McKelvy hit a grand slam, her second home run of the inning, to settle the scoring at 10-1.
Sydney Smyers started the game in the circle, surrendering five runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three.
Sierra Bertrand pitched 0.2 innings of relief, giving up five runs while striking out one.
Akron 6, Niagara 0 In the second game of the day, Niagara stayed within one run of Akron for the majority of the game, but the Zips came up with five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away for the 6-0 win over the Purple Eagles.
Niagara left 10 runners on base in the shutout loss, totaling seven hits.
Bridget Hogan led the way at third base, posting a 2-for-3 effort with a double and a walk.
Jennifer Szilagyi started the game in the circle, giving up six runs on seven hits over four innings. Smyers tossed three innings of no-run ball in relief, allowing two hits to the Zips while striking out one.
The Purple Eagles head back to tournament play next weekend as they head to Elon, N.C. for the Elon Tournament. Niagara will play Oakland and Elon on Friday, Mar. 11 before a rematch against Elon and a final game against Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Mar. 12.
