CARY, N.C. – The Purple Eagles' baseball team was defeated by N.C. State (8-2), 7-1, in its first game of the USA Baseball Irish Classic on Friday.
"We played much better today that we did Wednesday," said head coach
Rob McCoy. "We regrouped, refocused on playing one pitch at a time and keeping things simple. If we win a pitch here and a pitch there, the outcome of this game could have been completely different. That's saying something against a top tier ACC opponent."
Niagara's (2-9) lone run came in the top of the first inning. With
Greg Cullen already on base,
Christian Vangeison singled to right field, scoring Cullen.
Vangeison led Niagara with one RBI. In the field, catcher
Joel Brophy led the team with 10 putouts. Cullen had a team-high two assists.
Cody Eckerson pitched 3.2 innings and struck out five batters. Eckerson took the loss for the Purple Eagles.
Niagara is back in action against Alabama on Saturday, March 5 at 12:00 p.m.
